Branching Processes and Applications

These are notes of a talk given at the probability student seminar in the Weizmann institute of science on September 2011. After introducing Galton-Watson branching process, we consider conditions for which the process survives forever and for which it has a binary tree as a subtree with the same root. As an application, Mandelbrot’s fractal percolation model is discussed.

Fringe trees, Crump–Mode–Jagers branching processes and m-ary search trees

This survey studies asymptotics of random fringe trees and extended fringe trees in random trees that can be constructed as family trees of a Crump–Mode–Jagers branching process, stopped at a suitable time. This includes random recursive trees, preferential attachment trees, fragmentation trees, binary search trees and (more generally) m-ary search trees, as well as some other classes of random...

Branching Stochastic Processes: History, Theory, Applications

Branching stochastic processes can be considered as models in population dynamics, where the objects have a random lifetime and reproduction following some stochastic laws. Typical examples are nuclear reactions, cell proliferation and biological reproduction, some chemical reactions, economics and financial phenomena. In this survey paper we try to present briefly some of the most important an...

General Branching Processes with Immigration

A general multi-type branching process where new individuals immigrate according to some point process is considered. An intrinsic submartingale is defined and a convergence result for processes counted with random characteristics is obtained. Some examples are given. On expected durations of birth-death processes, with applications to branching processes and SIS epidemics

We study continuous-time birth-death type processes, where individuals have independent and identically distributed lifetimes, according to a random variable Q, with E[Q] = 1, and where the birth rate if the population is currently in state (has size) n is α(n). We focus on two important examples, namely α(n) = λn being a branching process, and α(n) = λn(N −n)/N which corresponds to an SIS (sus...
